To say Michael’s story is inspiring is an understatement. As a young rap artist and athlete, he was prescribed opioids for a sports injury - an injury that ended his dreams of being in the big leagues; and then, after successfully getting signed to a record contract for his other passion, writing and performing rap music, he started living the stereotypical rapper’s life of partying and touring. Michael’s raw honesty about his struggles from the heights of his music career to the deep darkness of addiction and his subsequent non-linear journey to sobriety and advocacy is compelling and astonishing. In this interview, Lorraine and Michael speak about transforming the role of music in his life, from the thing he associated with his addiction, to the creative force he utilized for his own healing. As one of Michael’s artistic mentors, Lorraine told him that if he “let his Passion meet and serve his Purpose” music could be the way to support his own recovery and to contribute to the recovery of others. Michael has done just that and is currently a powerful advocate and part of our LCS team.
